Spring was hiding.

Mama’s cold and the chill outside stuck around.

Inside the wastebasket, balled-up tissues piled up like snow.

Mama watched the rain skid down the window.

She looked as grey as the clouds.

I put my rain boots away and instead of puddle jumping,

dipped my brush in paint and splashed it on paper

to make Mama’s cheeks rosy.

I got sparkling greens from the garden,

Papa chopped and sizzled vegetables in different colors

to brighten Mama’s day.

The hiss and clatter and the aromas in their loud

and quiet ways called Mama into the kitchen.

Mama’s eyes lit up at the flowers blooming in my paintings and

the rainbow-colored soup steaming in bowls.

While Mama slowly sipped, color rushed back to her face.

“Spring is here,” Mama smiled.

Thanks to Giphy for the inspiration.
